Few people in Kearney and Holt realize how much their community life is quietly influenced by one organization. When residents ask what the Kearney Enrichment Council (KEC) actually does, the answer often surprises them. After hearing about the programs, events, and services that enhance the town throughout the year, the common response is simple: “I’ve been to that—I just didn’t know it was KEC.”

Behind the scenes, KEC works all year to unite the community. Over 35,000 people attend Council-organized events each year, from cherished traditions to new celebrations that boost local pride. The organization runs with a dedicated team of seventeen staff members, including three full-time professionals, all focused on creating opportunities for residents of every age.

Many of the spaces and experiences people cherish most are made possible through KEC’s leadership. The historic Old Firehouse, now a lively hub for community activities, is managed by the Council. Major initiatives like the splash pad project have transformed public spaces into gathering spots for families. Senior programs have expanded to include exercise, social activities, and new services to enrich later years. Youth programs have also thrived, with camps tripling in size—even during difficult times—offering meaningful experiences for young residents.

Community celebrations have also expanded under KEC’s guidance. From the annual Oktoberfest to the town’s first Christmas parade, these events create shared memories and strengthen the bonds that make Kearney and Holt special places to live.
